January’s Speak Easy Secret: Managing fear in any situation!
17 Jan 2025

✨ Exciting News: My TEDx talk will be published soon! 🎉
I’ll let you in on a little secret. Despite being an experienced actress and public speaking coach, I was terribly nervous before stepping onto that TEDx stage! My heart raced, my mind froze, and I felt completely out of sync. Why? Because I cared deeply about my message. The weight of sharing an “idea worth spreading” made it all the more important—and intimidating.
Then, the words of the famous biblical phrase, “Physician heal thyself,” came to mind. And I thought, “Take your own advice, Elia!”
That’s why, in this month’s Speak Easy, we’re talking about overcoming fear in public speaking.

Speak Easy Secrets
Calm Anxiety, nerves & fear
My go-to tool? The 4-7-8 breath exercise—a technique used by psychologists to calm panic attacks and anxiety.
I learned this approach from my first business coach, Crystal Davis (LinkedIn), and it remains my most trusted method for regaining focus and confidence and to calm the all-too-common anxiety, nerves, and fear! To learn and practice the 4-7-8 Breath Exercise, watch here:
This is a miracle tool. In only 57 seconds, I was brought back to a place of calm, mental freshness, relaxation, and joy thanks to this quick, fail-proof breath exercise.
When it was time to walk out onto that TEDx stage, I felt like the best version of myself!

Did you know?
Next week I’ve been asked to do a keynote speech in Madrid at the
pharmaceutical conference, “iINFLUENCE – Infection in Focus!” I’ll be speaking on “How to Give Effective Presentations in a Conference Setting.”

I’ll leave you with one last thought about public speaking fear.
Fear is just a sign that you care!
With one little breath exercise, you can reign in that fear! So, take a deep breath, step onto that stage, and own your message with confidence!
Remember my mantra, awareness is power!
